Affordable Chicken Coops

A number of people today, concerned about the origins and quality of their meat, consider raising chickens at home. People living in rural areas, away from easy access to supermarkets have long considered it prudent to keep some poultry to ensure a fairly regular supply of eggs and meat. To do this, one of the first steps is to ensure that they have a safe, sturdy and hygienic coop to nest in. Nowadays, it is possible to find a wide variety of coops to suit every budget.

When buying a coop, ensure that it is solidly constructed and able to withstand wind, snow and rain. Good ventilation is also a must. It must also be easy to clean and access the chickens inside. Depending on your budget, you can decide to get an enclosed coop where the chickens can nest or one with an attached run. The latter allows the chickens area to run around while still remaining within the confines of the coop structure. There are also some chicken coops specifically built for use in urban areas. Depending on the regulations governing livestock in your community, you can get cheap, small coops which can be used even in the smallest of backyards. The materials used in building coops can also be modified to suit your needs. Simple, basic coops made with wood and chicken wire are within the reach of most budgets.

Another way to keep costs lower would be to buy the coops and construct them in your own backyard.  Provided you have the time and labor,  this will work out less expensive than the prefabricated coops designed to be set up and used immediately.  It is also possible to build your own coop from scratch but the points concerning the health and safety of the chickens have to be rigorously followed.
